Crown Point, IN: A new group named Solidarity for Seniors have been visiting local Northwest Indiana senior care facilities and bringing care packages and live musical entertainment to spread cheer during the Coronavirus shutdown. Since the stay-at-home order has taken effect, facilities have been on lock-down for the safety of high-risk seniors, and as a result, has halted activities, visits, and all-around normal daily life. Not only have the activities for the senior residents stopped, but due to the virus, facility staff has been working around the clock to ensure proper care and safety for the residents.
This is where Solidarity for Seniors stepped in. The group, formed by real estate agents of Century 21 Affiliated in Crown Point and local businesses MeMes Place and Three Monkey's Pub, wanted to bring cheer to the residents and show the nurses and staff members that their hard work is appreciated. Most importantly, the group wanted to let them all know, they are not forgotten during this time.
To do this, Solidarity for Seniors came up with the idea to deliver uplifting care packages to the nurses and staff, and also provide live acoustic performances to the seniors. Keeping social distancing in mind, the music is performed by a local musician from outside the resident’s windows. This way the seniors can enjoy the music from the comfort of their rooms while at a safe distance.
The group has visited one to two facilities a week since its inception bringing music and care packages to the residents and staff. Local musician and Solidarity for Seniors member, Frank Ruvoli, performed the music for kickoff day, and as he moved around the building, the seniors and staff were seen smiling, singing, clapping, and dancing along.
“It was a really special day. It was great to see the smiles on everyone’s face,” Ruvoli said. “It’s amazing how much joy music can bring, and I loved seeing the residents and staff sing and move along to the music. I love, too, that we can show the nurses and staff our gratitude for all their hard work!”
The group will continue dropping off care packages and coordinating musical performances for local facilities in the weeks ahead. To learn more about the group and how to donate for care packages, visit the Solidarity for Seniors page on Facebook.
